Drum Roll Please…The Plantspiration Contest Winner Is…

Happy Memorial Day everyone!   Before we get to this month’s Creative Contest winner, we first want to thank all of the men and women who have served or are currently serving  our country.  Your service does not go unrecognized!  We hope all of our readers are celebrating this holiday with your friends and loved ones. We were lucky to all be together this weekend at our parent’s house to celebrate all of the May birthdays in our family: Matteo turned 1; Meika and Harper turned 2; and Hunter turned 15!  It was a fun family party!

Anyway, it’s been a very rainy month here on the East Coast but that didn’t stop several people from planting fantastic gardens and submitting their Plantspiration Contest entries.  Thank you to everyone who sent in a photo of your best container garden for your chance to win a $25 gift card to Terrain. Again, we are just blown away by our reader’s creativity!

If you weren’t able to participate in the Plantspiration Competition, don’t worry!  We will be hosting another Creative Contest later this summer!  So stay tuned!

Get ready for summer with this Ultimate Asian Flank Steak Marinade!

AsianFlankSteak_pin

The sun has barely shown its face in the past month, and it’s starting to feels like Seattle around here (I live near Philadelphia). One of the things I love about the change in seasons is the change of fare. I’ve been dying to grill, but Drew hasn’t been super pumped to stand out in the rain to do it. I get it.

This irresistible marinade was originally posted by Kelly Senyei on her blog Just A Taste and was sent to me through Yummly. Yummly is a great site that will send you recommendations for recipes based upon your preferences. This latest marinade was waiting for me in my inbox and I just couldn’t resist trying it out. To heck with the rainy forecast!  We decided to just broil. So without further ado here you have The Ultimate Asian Flank Steak Marinade.

Get Organized Permanently: The Marie Kondo Method

Get Organized Permanently: The Marie Kondo Method

I have great ambitions to organize and streamline my house.  Too much stuff lying around that I continually need to pick up makes me a little nuts.  If you’re reading this I’m guessing you can relate.

I recently heard about a book that helps you get organized permanently:  The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing written by Marie Kondo. Her tidying/organization method is called the KonMari Method. It is simple and effective, and the promise is that once I do this to my entire house, I WILL NEVER NEED TO ORGANIZE MY HOUSE AGAIN.  No more spring and fall cleaning and purging that takes forever and then reverts back in two weeks.

I interviewed a few people who have applied the KonMari Method and they all had good things to say.

Master Bathroom Renovation Reveal

Master Bathroom Renovation Reveal

It is the moment that I hope you have been waiting for and that I secretly worried would never get here…  The bathroom renovation is complete!

Before we begin with the before and after pictures, I have to give a special shout-out to the hubs, Randall. This literally could not have been possible without him.  He is a hard worker, exceedingly talented and very, very patient.  We dream these things up and he makes it become a reality.  We make a good team and it is nice that doing projects together is something we enjoy.  He did take issue with some of my painting techniques at various times, but overall we got along splendidly.  He is the best!

Okay sappy stuff over.  On to the reveal!

Thai-rrific Ground Turkey Laap Lettuce Wraps

Thai-rrific Ground Turkey Laap Lettuce Wraps

The recipe I am sharing with you today is a delicious Thai dish – Ground Turkey Laap Lettuce Wraps. Drew introduced me to Thai food several years ago when we started dating, and it is now one of my favorite cuisines. If you’ve never tried Thai, you really should give your taste buds an opportunity to experience this fresh and sometimes phet food. Phet is the Thai word for spicy. There are varying degrees of phet ranging from sort of spicy to life altering heat. Certainly not all dishes are phet, including today’s recipe, which is pretty mild.

Judy Branham, my mother-in-law, gave me this particular recipe for Ground Turkey Laap Lettuce Wraps, which she found in Food and Wine magazine.

Substitutes

There are a few substitutes for this dish.  Before I had the girls, there was a lot more time to prep ingredients, which we all know can tack an extra 20 to 30 minutes on to any recipe. I found Gourmet Garden Thai Seasoning Stir-In Paste at Wegmans to replace the fresh herbs, cutting the prep time for this dish to nil. I do encourage you to try the recipe with fresh ingredients if you have the time, but Drew and I both thought the stir-in paste was just as good (maybe even a little better).  However, if you use the stir-in seasoning paste, I recommend that you still add the crushed red pepper to taste and the fresh chopped mint.  For my 2 year old twin girls, I used a different seasoning on their portion – Gourmet Garden Lemongrass Seasoning Stir-in Paste (also from Wegmans) so that it wouldn’t be too spicy.
