Ever since the show Fixer Upper came on TV, Randall and I have become obsessed with the idea of buying and flipping properties.  We love doing renovation work and the idea of improving houses that are on their last legs is very appealing.  It seems too risky, too scary for ordinary people like us to ever make something like that a success.  But, one thing I have discovered in the 30+ years of life is that it is never too late to pursue dreams and look for inspiration from those around you.

One of my big inspirations has come from a high school friend that I feel fortunate to have reconnected with through Facebook, Lisa D’Alessandro (or Lisa Shappert for all of you Crestwood High School readers out there).  If you don’t know Lisa, she was always a little quiet until you got to know her, and then she was hilarious.  She is single-handedly working to bring fanny packs back into fashion, hot pink ones and all.  And let me tell you, she is working it!

The office reveal is finally here!  It has been a  long time coming and Sarah has been incredibly patient.

As a refresher, we started this project for our mom because her real estate business began to flourish and she needed a spot that she could call her home office that was functional and quiet. Her office was originally in her bedroom, but that isn’t always a recipe for success.  So we worked with a room that is in the downstairs of her house that has tons of wonderful natural light, some challenges in terms of wall space and shape, but overall offered us a blank slate. Here are a couple of before pictures of what the space looked like.

Mexican Street Corn salad_pinToday I am sharing another great recipe discovered by my mother-in-law, Judy Branham. For the girls first birthday we had a fiesta theme because Drew and I are big fans of Mexican food. Judy made this salad for the party and it was an enormous hit.  Now it’s one of our summer staples. I get compliments on it and requests for the recipe every time we make it for a BBQ with friends. This salad screams: “Long live summer!”

A big shout out to Six Sisters’ Stuff, who put together this highly recommended recipe. I have tried several of their recipes and they are always worth repeating.

I always at least double this recipe so that I have leftovers. It’s that good, and it’s amazing the different ways you can incorporate this salad into a meal. Stay tuned..more to come next week on one of my favorite ways to eat it. 😉

Floating Shelf_pinOne of my favorite projects that we completed in the bathroom renovation was the shelf above the toilet. We get a lot of compliments on it.  It was really inexpensive and easy to make – only $15!  Today I will share with you the easy steps for making the shelf.   But before I get to the instructions, I want to address one of the most frequent questions I get about the shelf.

Has anyone hit their head on it?

Uhmkay.  I will be completely honest and let you know Randall shared your concern.  It took some demonstrations on my part to prove to him that it is physically impossible to hit your head on the shelf, short of doing a back flip off the toilet which is not recommended. Completely safe, folks.  Completely safe.

So now, without further ado, here are the simple instructions for installing the shelf!
