Sherlock (3 years old) is Abby’s dog that she and Drew rescued when he was just a puppy.  He specializes in cuddling and patience.  Misha (3 years old) belongs to Katie and Carlo.  She is by far the smartest and best trained of the bunch.  Last but certainly not least are Leah (8 years old) and Indy (3 years old), who are owned by Randall and me.  Leah is the sweetest girl in the world and is a champion swimmer.  Indy…well…Indy likes to chew and is allergic to grass.  He struggles a bit, but he sure is a good snuggler.

DIY: Three Outdoor Pillow Slipcovers for Under $10

DIY: Three Outdoor Pillow Slipcovers For Under $10

I love throw pillows.  They make a space cozy and you can quickly and easily change the look of a room by switching them out at different times of the year.  The one thing I don’t like about throw pillows is that they can be kind of pricey, and I’ve never really understood why.

So, with the help of my mother-in-law Enza Gambone, today’s post will help you sew your own pillow covers.  Enza is a professional seamstress, she is a fantastic teacher and this post would not have been possible without her!

Sewing is a really helpful skill.  It was not as hard as I thought it would be and sewing will save you serious cash.  In fact, it cost me under $10 ($10!!!) and the assistance of a kind, patient mother-in-law to recover three outdoor pillows. I actually looked at just replacing the pillows at a cost of between $15-$20 per pillow.  I therefore calculate that this DIY project saved me roughly  $35-$50. But I anticipate it will save me much more cash down the road because I am hooked on sewing now.

After completing our bathroom renovation, a few people asked me: “How do you put all of these ideas together?” That is a good question and the answer is that it is a very easy method – inspiration boards!  Today I am going to share with you the inspiration boards that we are using for Sarah’s office.  It is a mix of Pinspiration meets virtual scrapbooking.

As I mentioned in our previous post, the room Sarah is using for her home office has a ton of potential. The best feature of the room is that it is very bright and gets tons of natural light all day long.  The room is visible from the rest of the house, so we wanted it to flow with her current decor.  Her color palette tends towards very earthy natural colors like red, green and brown.  We want her office colors to compliment the other rooms, but we also wanted it to stand out as a separate space.

One of my best friends from college, Allison Rue, introduced me to Dirt Cake.  Yes, you read that right, Dirk Cake. It isn’t even really cake, but it is layered like a cake so I am guessing that is where the name comes from.   It sounds gross, but OMGoodness (yes, I loved Zootopia) it is DELICIOUS.  So delicious in fact that I can only make it for the most special of occasions when I know there will never be leftovers because I lack self control. I make it every year for our annual neighborhood party and the kids just gobble it up. It is one of those recipes that I am always asked to share.  So, here is my Dirt Cake recipe for you to enjoy at a summer cookout or on any old night when you need a yummy treat!
