Poetry Contest

It’s the celebration you have been waiting for and didn’t even know it. That’s right…it is National Poetry Month! Button Jar is celebrating by hosting a poetry contest.  We are asking our readers to contribute your best haiku (more than one submission is encouraged) throughout the month of April.  We will award a fantastic prize on April 29th.  Read on for more details.

The Beauty of Haiku

Writing poetry can be a great way to exercise your creative muscles, relieve stress, and just have fun.  One of my favorite types of poetry is the haiku.  Don’t remember haiku from your high school days? As a refresher, these poems are a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.  Short and sweet.  They are traditionally about nature and have an element of surprise, but nowadays a haiku can be written about everything and anything.  They are easier to write than you might think, and it is a great creative activity to do with your kids, significant other or by yourself.

Here are a few haiku the Creative Crew put together for your reading pleasure:

Folding Laundry
-by Alicia Sell
Lights. Darks. Dirty socks.
Mounds of laundry need folding.
Hit “fluff” one more time.

Sorrow
–by Abby Branham

Forest is abuzz
Sunlight lingers over buds
Birds nest is empty

Relief
–by Abby Branham

Earth replenishing
Sunlight fades on vacant trees
Birds breast swells with joy!

Dinner in the Backyard
–by Katie & Carlo Gambone

Cool fire lights the space
Beats in the background feed us
Audible shadows

Ode to Mayor Nutter
–by Katie & Carlo Gambone

A spring on Fairmount
Glance meets a familiar face
Hey.  Do you know me?
