Fall Home Tour 2016: Katie’s Home

Posted by Katie Gambone

Hi there! Welcome to the Gambone home.

We appreciate you joining us for the second installment of the Button Jar Fall Home Tour.  Monday’s post featured Alicia’s home (pre-packing) and her tastefully simple Fall decor.  Today I am sharing with you my house spruced up for the Fall. Check back in on Friday to see Abby’s digs and a yummy treat.

We are opening  our homes to Button Jar readers not because our spaces are perfect but rather because we think it’s fun to see how real people live and decorate.  We hope this gives you some ideas for your own home.  I borrow ideas from my friends and from home store catalogs all the time!

City Living with Kids and Pets

A couple of things before we get started. I live in the city in a row home, so anything decorative has to be minimal.  Our house is exactly 14 feet across at the widest spots so space is at a premium and everything has to serve a purpose.  I also have a 1.5 year old son and a 70+ pound Rottweiler, so anything breakable has to be small enough to fit on a high shelf and anything within reach has to be kid and dog friendly.  I’m betting a lot of you can relate.

So, without further ado, let’s get started.

On my front door, I am displaying a pretty colorful wreath that I got on a huge sale at Terrain,  I picked up the burlap ribbon with red and orange stripes along the edge at Michael’s.

Let’s go inside. This is my cozy living room.  If you look closely, you can see Misha snuggled on her dog bed just beside the TV stand.

If we are home, we are either in bed asleep or we are spending time in the living room and kitchen (we have an open floor plan).  To spruce it up for the Fall, I found some adorable soft cotton-filled pumpkins at Michael’s.   They are not going to hurt a tiny foot if they get dropped and Misha doesn’t seem interested in chewing them so this decoration is a win in my book.  And…they are pretty adorable.

Here’s a closer look at  them.  I put a few on a candle tray that wasn’t in use and added some decorative acorns.

Another pumpkin turned up on our secretary, which also serves as toy storage.  Please also notice our one family picture which is clearly out of date.  I still love it though and it makes me smile. Maybe we’ll take a new one for the holidays.

Like Alicia, I’m also a huge fan of throw pillows and blankets.  I picked up a few new pillows for Fall at Marshall’s.  They had such good variety!  I really like the pillow on the right which has a funky pattern and warm fall colors.  The pillows on the left include a navy blue sweater pillow and the little white pillow has a pretty lacy pattern on it.  Also – please note Misha would not get off her bed, so her dog buns made it in this shot…again.

Perhaps my FAVORITE Fall decoration though is this really pretty navy blue pillow that looks like it is leaves.  Navy is clearly a favorite color of mine right now and this pillow just called my name.  I think it’s gorgeous.  The throw blanket on the seat was my mom’s.  I can’t remember how it came to reside in my house, but I love the colors in it and it makes me think of her.  The little gold velvet chair is also a favorite handed down from Drew and Abby.  It desperately needs to be re-upholstered but it is probably everyone’s favorite place to sit (including Misha’s).  I’ve looked into reupholstering it a few times but it’s pretty expensive so it’s a project for a later date.  You can be sure I’ll share before and afters on Button Jar if we decide to give this chair a new look.

Let’s move to the kitchen/dining room.

I found this beautiful table runner at Marshall’s.  The funny little pumpkin teapot featured in my tablescape was a gift from my mom and dad.  And there’s one of those cute bean bag pumpkins again, complimented by a squash.

I started collecting white china, specifically oyster plates, a few years ago.  I don’t have as much time to get out to antique shops anymore so my collection is pretty small.  But I subbed in this cute pumpkin plate (also a gift from my mom and dad) for the Fall.

Across from the table is our china cabinet.  I placed some fun decorative pumpkins on our spin-up stools that serve as extra seating when we have guests.  The awesome copper container on top of the china cabinet was a gift from Alicia and Randall.  I can’t wait to be able display it in a more prominent way when we move to a larger home.

At first, Misha tried to chew on the stick pumpkins that sit on the floor, but we’ve made it clear that is not cool so I’m happy to report she’s left them alone for the most part.

And finally, my favorite Fall candle is the Boulangerie Vanilla and Fig scent from Anthropologie.  I open up the front and back door so there is a nice cool breeze pushing through the downstairs and light this candle. Within a few minutes, it smells AMAZING in our house.

Thanks for taking a quick tour of my home with me!  It’s not huge but we love it and have lots of happy memories here.   As I was taking these pictures, I realized that I tend to decorate with warmer Fall colors throughout the year.  Also, I cleaned my house just for these pictures so it felt really kind of nice to document the temporarily tidy, still space.  After I finished taking the pictures, I sat down and enjoyed a cup of tea and flipped through the West Elm catalog before Matteo and Carlo came home.  It was awesome!  The stillness didn’t last long but that’s okay because I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Thank you! That’s so nice. It’s actually an indoor/outdoor rug. I picked that type of rug on purpose because it is such a high traffic area. I think I got it from Target two years ago so I’m not sure if they have it anymore.

Love it! I’m happy to see the crazy teapot and plate, and as usual, you are really good at the quirky look. It also is nice to see that you don’t have to spend a ton of money to make a home feel different. A few new colors, a new scent, a few seasonal items, and it FEELS different to be in the space. Gotta get a book to read!
